Down through the centuries, a good sound has always been the primary goal of piano makers. Today the love for one's instrument, experience and a musical ear are still the most important tools of a master piano maker in creating the sound of a good brand.   A good piano sound consists of a whole mosaic of different factors all carefully pieced together, such as the volume of the sound (divided up into the attack the steady state and the decay), the inharmonicity and spectral patterns of the partials etc.   Thus clarity and brilliance are created.  Schimmel knows how all these various components interact with each other. Schimmel quality is something you can hear.

The secrets lie in the optimum matching of the properties of the strings, soundboard, bridges, hammers and leverage ratios of the keyboard-and-action assembly. There is more to it than just copying some German-made piano. Copying cannot replace tradition. The deciding factor is the many decades of experience gathered, built upon and passed down from generation to generation in musical-instrument-making families. There is no substitute for this solid foundation.
